Tommy Paul: Unveiling the Stockholm Connection to Grand Slam Greatness

In Sweden, the American tennis player Tommy Paul was crowned again, the same country where he won his first ATP title. Alongside Berrettini, he is now the third player with the most titles in 2024 after Sinner and Alcaraz. This victory at the Stockholm tournament was significant for Paul, as he expressed, “probably this is my favorite tournament in the world.” He had previously won his first title in Stockholm in 2021 and this win holds a special place in his career.

According to Paul, the aura of the Swedish tournament is unique due to its year-round presence at a club. He mentioned, “‘Playing in a 250 always has something special, as it’s a club that organizes the event. Most of the time, it’s venues that are set up a week before the tournament, especially in indoor events. They are stadiums, basketball courts, or whatever, where a court is placed on top and the stands are set up. Here, there is a court full-time throughout the year,” in an interview with Vogue Scandinavia.

Paul’s connection to the Stockholm tournament is evident, especially as it has seen great Grand Slam champions like Björn Borg and Stefan Edberg being crowned in the past. Paul expressed his admiration for Edberg, stating, “Actually, I’ve never spoken to him, but my coach adores him, and we love the way he used to play. I’ve seen many videos of him playing.”

Overall, Tommy Paul’s recent victory at the Stockholm tournament not only adds another title to his name in 2024 but also solidifies his affinity for the tournament and its rich tennis history.
